Islam was introduced to the region that is present-day Turkey in the 7th century, shortly after the death of the Prophet Muhammad. The area was ruled by the Byzantine Empire at the time, and the early spread of Islam in the region was primarily the result of the Arab-Byzantine wars.

The first Muslim state in the region was the Emirate of Rûm, which was established in the mid-11th century by the Seljuk Turks, a group of Turkic warriors from Central Asia.

The Seljuk Turks conquered large parts of Anatolia (present-day Turkey). They established several states in the region, including the Sultanate of Rum, which became a significant power in the area. Islam became the dominant religion in Anatolia and has remained the majority religion in Turkey since then.
